Genuine MAN injection pump for the D2866 LE401. Sealing arrangements between the pump and the timing case matter more than they appear to: the pump drive passes through into the engine, and a failed seal there lets engine oil into the pump drive housing or, in the other direction, allows fuel to reach the engine oil. Fuel dilution of engine oil is the more serious of the two, because it thins the oil and reduces its load-carrying capacity throughout the engine without any obvious external sign. Where oil level has been rising rather than falling, or the oil smells of diesel, the injection pump's sealing is one of the small number of candidates worth investigating. Oil analysis identifies fuel dilution directly and removes the guesswork from a symptom that is otherwise easy to misread.
