An electric speed adjuster moves the governor's setting from a remote control rather than by a mechanical linkage, which on a vessel means the helm can set engine speed without a cable run. Where one fails, the engine usually reverts to a fixed setting, so the behaviour is predictable rather than dangerous. Check the linkage and its return spring before condemning the adjuster, since both are cheaper to put right.
