Genuine MAN gearbox oil temperature gauge reading 50 to 150 °C, for the D2862 LE463 and related installations. Gearbox oil temperature is one of the more useful instruments on a working boat because it responds to conditions the engine gauges do not: a transmission running hot indicates a cooling problem in its own circuit, an oil level or grade problem, or a mechanical fault developing — none of which show on engine instrumentation. A gauge that has never been noticed to move is easy to ignore, which is why establishing what normal looks like for a given vessel and load is worth doing while everything is healthy. Recording the normal reading at cruising load in the engine log gives the next person a baseline that no manual can provide.
