Genuine MAN oil pump for the D2840 LE301, the V10. Oil pumps on engines of this type are gear pumps: two meshing gears in a close-fitting body carry oil around the outside of the mesh and deliver it under pressure, and the clearances between gear tips and body, and between gear faces and end plate, are what determine how much pressure the pump can build. Those clearances open with wear, and the result is a pump that still delivers volume but loses pressure at low speed — which is why hot idle pressure is the reading that falls first and the one worth logging. A pump that holds pressure at working speed but not at idle is describing exactly this, and is usually a rebuild rather than an emergency.
