Genuine MAN turbocharger for the D2866 LE401. The turbine end runs at exhaust gas temperature and the compressor end at something close to ambient, with the bearing housing between them carrying oil that has to survive both — which is the fundamental design tension in a turbocharger and the reason oil specification and change intervals matter more here than anywhere else on the engine. Oil that has thinned with fuel dilution, or thickened and oxidised from extended intervals, fails at the hot end first. On a marine engine that spends long periods at steady high load, thermal loading is constant rather than cyclical, which is easier on some components and harder on the oil. Treat the specified oil grade as a requirement and not a recommendation.
