Genuine MAN turbocharger for the D2866 LE401, the 11.97-litre in-line six. A turbocharger is matched to an engine's rating, not merely to its block: compressor and turbine housing sizes are chosen to deliver a particular boost characteristic at a particular power output, which is why two engines sharing a model designation can take different turbochargers if their ratings differ. Fitting a unit intended for a different rating produces an engine that either runs out of breath at the top or makes boost too early and runs hot, and neither shows up as an obvious mismatch at installation. Where an engine has been re-rated during its life, match the turbocharger to the rating plate rather than to the model name. The same caution applies to a boat bought second-hand with no service history: the turbocharger fitted is evidence of what somebody once ordered, not proof that they ordered correctly, and a unit that has been running slightly wrong for years will have left its mark on exhaust temperatures rather than on anything the previous owner would have mentioned.
