On a marine engine the case for the higher-specification bearing is stronger than on a road application, because the duty cycle differs in kind, not in degree: a workboat holds high load continuously for hours, where a truck engine sees the same load in bursts with recovery between them. Continuous high load is precisely the condition that finds the fatigue limit of a bearing overlay. Where MAN specifies a sputtered shell for an engine, it is a response to that duty, not an upgrade, and substituting a standard shell to save money is a false economy. Check what the engine was originally specified with; what the last rebuild happened to fit proves nothing.
