Genuine MAN big-end bearing shells at the first repair stage, 0.25 mm undersize, for the D2866 E. Shells are supplied in pairs and fitted with attention to two details that are easy to get wrong in a hurry: the locating tang seats in its notch so the shell cannot rotate, and the oil hole in the shell lines up with the feed drilling in the rod. A shell fitted with the hole obstructed starves the bearing from the moment the engine starts, and the failure that follows looks identical to an oil pressure problem. Check both before the cap goes on, and fit shells dry into clean bores — oil behind a shell prevents it seating against the housing and interferes with heat transfer.
