Genuine MAN big-end bearing shells at the second repair stage, 0.50 mm undersize, for the D2866 E. Renew big-end shells as a complete set across the engine rather than replacing the ones that look worst. Shells from a single production batch are held to the same wall thickness within a tight tolerance, and mixing sets from different sources or different ages introduces variation in clearance between cylinders that no amount of care in assembly can correct. On a six-cylinder engine the cost difference between one pair and six is small beside the labour already committed to having the sump off and the rods down. Shells are among the cheapest components in a rebuild and among the most expensive to get wrong.
