Genuine MAN big-end bearing shells for the D2866 E in the normal size with a 0.10 mm step. Bearing clearance is the dimension the whole arrangement depends on, and it is measured, never assumed: plastigauge across the journal with the cap torqued to specification gives the figure directly and costs an hour across a six-cylinder engine. Too little clearance and there is no room for the oil film to form, so the bearing runs hot from the first minute; too much and the film cannot hold pressure, oil pressure drops and the bearing hammers. Both failures look similar afterwards and both are avoidable with a measurement taken before the engine is closed up. Record the measured clearance in the engine's file; it is the baseline that makes the next overhaul's figures mean something.
