Genuine MAN big-end bearing shells in the standard size for the D2866 E. Bearing shells are consumable by design: the overlay is deliberately soft enough to embed small particles that find their way into the oil, protecting the crankshaft journal at the expense of the shell. That is why a bearing showing embedded debris is doing its job rather than failing, and why the condition of shells removed at overhaul is a useful record of what the oil has been carrying. Shells scored right through the overlay, or showing the backing material, indicate something the system could not absorb — a filtration failure or debris from an earlier component failure — and that cause deserves attention before new shells go in.
