Genuine MAN connecting rod assembly for the D2866 E in-line six. Connecting rods are replaced far less often than the bearings that run in them, and the useful distinction when ordering is between a rod that has failed and a bearing that has. A spun or wiped bearing shell usually leaves the rod serviceable, and the correct purchase is a set of shells in the right size class; a rod that has been bent, overheated or stretched is scrap regardless of what the bearings look like. That decision is made with measuring equipment rather than by inspection, which is why a rod of unknown history is worth having checked before the engine is reassembled around it. Rod straightness and big-end roundness are the two measurements that decide it, and neither can be judged by eye.
