Genuine MAN piston for the D2840, MAN's V10. Damage to a piston crown is a different story from wear and needs reading differently. Pitting, melting or a hole in the crown is detonation damage — pressure spikes from poor combustion, incorrect injection timing or a faulty injector spraying onto the crown instead of atomising — and it happens over hours or minutes, not years. Finding it means the cause is still present: fitting a new piston into an engine with the injector or timing fault unresolved simply repeats the process. Have the injector for that cylinder bench tested before the engine is reassembled, and check injection timing instead of assuming it. Detonation damage on more than one cylinder points at timing or fuel quality, not at a single faulty injector, and that distinction changes the scope of the repair considerably.
