About this part
Genuine MAN torsional vibration damper for the D2866 E. The reason this component matters out of proportion to its price is what happens downstream when it stops working: torsional energy that the damper no longer absorbs does not disappear, it goes into the crankshaft as cyclic stress. Crankshafts tolerate that for a long time and then fail by fatigue cracking — the one crankshaft failure mode with no repair route, since a cracked shaft cannot be reclaimed by grinding at any undersize and is scrapped outright. A damper is therefore cheap insurance against the most expensive single component in the engine, which is the argument for renewing it at overhaul instead of inspecting it and hoping. This is an earlier number for the application; check the current one before ordering from an old catalogue.
