Genuine MAN torsional vibration damper for the D2866 LE401 in-line six. Fitting is where most of the avoidable damage to a damper happens: it locates on the crankshaft nose and its bolts are a torque-critical joint, so an impact-driven or under-torqued fit lets the unit work against the shaft rather than with it. Check the mounting face and the nose for fretting before the new unit goes on, and use the specified tightening figures rather than feel — this is not a fastener where a generous guess is safer than a light one, since over-torque on an elastomer-mounted assembly distorts the very component that is supposed to flex. Renewing the crankshaft front seal while access is open is the usual sensible economy, as almost all the labour of that job is the labour already spent getting to the damper.
