Overheating that appears only under sustained load is the classic heat exchanger symptom, and it is worth distinguishing from the other causes it resembles. A fouled bundle reduces heat transfer without reducing flow, so temperature is normal at moderate power and climbs when the engine is worked; a restricted raw water circuit reduces flow, which usually shows at all loads; and a failed thermostat or a low coolant level produces different patterns again. Establishing when the temperature climbs, rather than that it climbs, is what separates them and saves dismantling the wrong component. Logging the temperature at a known load and a known sea temperature gives a baseline that makes the next comparison meaningful rather than impressionistic.
