Genuine MAN heat exchanger assembly for the D2866 LE401. Refilling and bleeding the closed circuit after a heat exchanger has been opened is where cooling problems are created rather than solved. Air trapped in the top of a heat exchanger or in a high point of the pipework does not circulate, creates a hot spot, and can produce overheating on an engine whose components are all sound. Fill slowly, use the bleed points provided rather than relying on the system to purge itself, and check the level again after the engine has been run up to temperature and allowed to cool — the level almost always drops as the remaining air works its way out. Running the engine with the filler cap off until the thermostat opens, where the installation allows it, is the simplest way to let trapped air escape.
