Genuine MAN raw water pump for the D2840 and D2842. Galvanic corrosion is a factor here that has no equivalent on a land engine: a bronze pump body plumbed into a circuit that includes other metals and filled with seawater is part of an electrochemical system, and the sacrificial anodes in the raw water circuit are what protect it. Anodes that have been allowed to waste away entirely stop protecting and start letting the next-least-noble metal corrode instead, which may be the pump. Check and renew anodes on schedule, and where a pump body shows pink-tinged dezincification or pitting, look at the anode history before assuming the pump was simply old. Anodes are also among the cheapest parts on the boat and among the most consistently neglected.
