Genuine MAN water pump shaft for the D2848 LE422, 776 grams and 196 mm long. The shaft carries the impeller at one end and the drive at the other, and the mechanical seal runs directly on it. That is the surface to inspect: a shaft scored where the seal has been running will destroy a new seal within hours, and no amount of care in assembly compensates for it. Measure the seal running surface rather than judging it by eye, since the wear that matters is a few hundredths deep.
