Genuine MAN raw water pump for the D2866. The shaft seal in a pump of this type is a wear item with a finite life, and it works in a demanding position — sealing against water on one side and holding lubricant on the other, on a shaft that turns whenever the engine runs. Seals fail gradually rather than suddenly, which is why the weep hole exists to make that gradual failure visible before it reaches the bearing. Where a pump is being overhauled, the seal is renewed as a matter of course alongside the impeller and the bearing, since the labour of reaching it dwarfs its cost and a used seal reinstalled rarely lasts as long as the rest of the rebuild.
