Genuine MAN raw water pump for the D2866. Fitting a flexible impeller is a small job with a detail that matters: the vanes must be bent in the direction the pump turns as the impeller goes in, not against it. An impeller installed with its vanes trailing the wrong way works initially and then tears, usually within hours rather than minutes, and the resulting failure looks identical to an ordinary impeller breakup. Use a smear of glycerine or silicone grease rather than a petroleum-based lubricant, since the neoprene the vanes are made from softens on contact with oil or diesel. Turn the pump by hand in its running direction as the impeller is pressed home. An impeller fitted correctly and lubricated properly is one of the few marine jobs where doing it right takes no longer than doing it wrong.
