Genuine MAN timing case for the D2866 E. The timing case encloses the gear train that drives the camshaft and injection pump at the front of the engine, and it does two jobs: keeping dirt out of gears that run in oil mist rather than under pressure, and carrying the crankshaft front oil seal. Both matter. A timing case that has been distorted by over-tightening, or whose seal housing has been damaged during a previous removal, will leak from the front of the engine in a way that is commonly blamed on the seal itself. Inspect the seal housing whenever the case is off. Renewing the front seal while the case is off is one of the clearest economies available, since the labour is already committed.
