Genuine MAN turbocharger for the D2866 LE and LXE builds. A turbocharger has no bearing of its own in the usual sense: the shaft floats on a film of pressurised engine oil, and that film is the only thing holding a rotating assembly turning at tens of thousands of revolutions clear of its housing. Lose oil pressure and the two touch, which is why turbine failure from oil starvation happens in seconds rather than progressively, and why the overwhelming majority of failed turbochargers are the symptom of an oil problem rather than its cause. Before fitting a replacement, establish why the last one stopped: oil feed restriction, a blocked filter, extended oil change intervals or dilution will destroy the new unit exactly as efficiently. Prime the bearing housing with clean oil at installation and crank without firing until pressure is established.
