Genuine MAN exhaust manifold seal for the D2866 LE401 and D2840 LE301. A blowing manifold joint announces itself by sound before anything else — a ticking or puffing that is loudest on a cold start and quietens as components expand and partially close the gap. That pattern is diagnostic, and it is also the reason the fault is often dismissed: it appears to improve as the engine warms. It does not improve; it becomes inaudible while continuing to erode the sealing faces.
