Genuine MAN intercooler for the D2866 LE401. Charge air temperature is the measurement that would make intercooler condition visible, and on most working boats it is not instrumented — which is why intercooler decline is generally diagnosed by inference rather than by reading. Where an installation does carry the sensor, logging the figure at a known load gives a baseline that makes later comparison meaningful. Where it does not, the practical substitutes are exhaust temperature and the engine's ability to reach rated speed under load, both of which shift as the cooler loses effectiveness but neither of which points specifically at it. Neither substitute is conclusive on its own, which is the honest reason intercooler condition is so often diagnosed only after everything else has been eliminated.
