Genuine MAN intercooler for the D2840 and D2842. Leaks are the failure that matters most on a charge-air cooler, and on a marine installation they have a particular significance: a water-cooled intercooler that has developed an internal leak can admit water into the charge air path, and water reaching a cylinder does not compress. That is a hydraulic loading risk rather than merely a performance problem. Pressure-testing the charge air side is the check that settles it, and it is worth doing whenever an engine has shown unexplained power loss or whenever a cylinder has suffered damage that nobody has accounted for. Any cylinder damage without an established cause on an engine with a water-cooled charge air cooler makes that test the obvious first step.
