Genuine MAN crankshaft for the D2866, MAN's 11.97-litre turbocharged in-line six. The crankshaft turns the pistons' reciprocating motion into rotation at its main and rod journals, and those journals are where its working life is decided. Scoring, wear or an out-of-round journal — usually the downstream result of contaminated oil or a bearing that failed upstream — can normally be corrected by grinding the journal to a standard undersize and fitting correspondingly oversized bearing shells. That is why a worn crankshaft is not automatically scrap, and why this number is also listed in a remanufactured version rather than only as a new part. What cannot be machined out is fatigue cracking from sustained heavy load: a cracked crank is condemned outright. If the shaft is out, the torsional vibration damper is worth assessing at the same time — once its damping element has aged, the crankshaft is what absorbs that vibration instead.
