About this part
Genuine MAN piston for the D2840, D2842 and D2848. Carbon build-up in the top ring groove and on the crown is normal in a diesel and becomes a problem only at the extremes. Heavy deposits behind the top ring can hold it out against the bore or, worse, prevent it moving freely, which is the mechanism behind a stuck ring and the loss of sealing that follows. Where pistons are out for inspection, cleaning the grooves properly — with a groove cleaner rather than anything that removes metal — is part of the job. Deposits that are unusually heavy for the hours run point at combustion quality or oil consumption rather than at the pistons themselves. Compare deposits between cylinders as well: one piston noticeably dirtier than its neighbours is describing that cylinder's injector.
