About this part
Genuine MAN piston for the D2866, the 11.97-litre in-line six. Fitting a piston is a job where the details carry the outcome: rings gapped and their gaps distributed around the piston instead of aligned, the ring compressor used properly so no ring catches the top of the liner, the piston oriented correctly in the bore according to its front marking, and the gudgeon pin retained by whatever method the design specifies. An error in any of them surfaces after the engine has run, never during assembly. Where the engine uses a directional piston — most diesels do, because the bowl is offset — the orientation mark is not optional. Confirm ring gaps in the bore they will actually run in; the set as supplied cannot be trusted for this, since gaps are specified for the finished bore.
