Genuine MAN axial face seal set for the D2848 LE422. An axial or mechanical face seal works quite differently from a radial lip seal: two flat, lapped faces are held together by spring pressure and run against each other with a microscopically thin film of liquid between them. That construction tolerates higher speeds and pressures than a lip seal and is far less forgiving of contamination or of being touched during assembly. It is supplied as a set because both faces are lapped as a pair.
