Genuine MAN flywheel assembly for the D2866 E. Supplied as an assembly, which normally means the ring gear and any coupling provisions arrive fitted and correctly located — removing both the shrink-fit operation and the question of whether the ring is oriented correctly, since ring gears on some engines have a chamfer on one face that must face the starter. Fitting a ring the wrong way round produces an engine that cranks but engages harshly and wears both pinion and ring quickly. Where the assembly is bought rather than the components, that class of error disappears, which is usually worth the difference on a part that is awkward to redo. Ring orientation is also one of the errors that runs perfectly for a while before announcing itself, which makes it hard to attribute later.
