Genuine MAN piston for the D2862 and D2868. Pistons are replaced as a complete set across an engine, not individually except where a single cylinder has suffered discrete damage, and the reason is balance and consistency, not economy. Reciprocating masses are matched within a tolerance, and a set with mixed wear produces different compression and different friction in different cylinders. Where one piston has been destroyed by detonation or by hydraulic loading while the rest are sound, a single replacement is legitimate — but its weight class needs to correspond to those already in the engine, which is marked on the piston and cannot be inferred from the part number. Where a full set is being fitted, weight matching is handled by the supplier and is one less thing to verify on the bench.
