About this part
Genuine MAN piston for the D2840, D2842 and D2848 families. Ring condition rather than piston condition usually determines whether a piston is reusable, and the two are assessed separately. A piston with sound skirt dimensions, an undamaged crown and clean, square ring grooves can be reused with a new ring set; one whose grooves have worn wider than specification cannot, because the new rings will flutter in them and neither seal nor last. Groove wear is measured with a new ring and a feeler gauge, which is a quick check on the bench and the one that most often decides between a ring set and a piston set. Where groove wear is borderline, replacing the piston is the cheaper decision once the labour of a second strip-down is counted.
