Genuine MAN cylinder head for the D2866 LE401, the 11.97-litre in-line six. Pressure-testing a used head is the check that finds what inspection cannot: cracks between valve seats, into coolant passages, or around the injector bore, which are common on a head that has overheated and are effectively invisible. The test is routine work for a machine shop and inexpensive relative to the labour of fitting a head that turns out to be cracked. Where a head is being reused after an overheat rather than replaced, it should be considered suspect until tested rather than sound until proven otherwise. Where several heads have come off the same engine, testing them all costs little more than testing one and identifies which are worth keeping.
