Genuine MAN oil pump gear for the D2866 LE401 and D2866 E. End clearance — the gap between the gear faces and the end plate or body face — is the dimension that most often decides whether a rebuilt pump makes pressure, and it is the one most often left unmeasured. Oil escapes axially across that face as readily as radially past the tips, and a few hundredths too much clearance is enough to lose pressure at idle when the pump is turning slowly. Measure it with a straight edge and feeler gauge across the assembled gears before the pump is closed, and compare against specification rather than against what it looked like when it came apart. Recording the measured figure gives the next rebuild a baseline, which is otherwise entirely absent on a component nobody documents.
