About this part

Genuine MAN drive gear taking the air compressor drive off the camshaft on the D2866 LE401. Compressor drives are worth understanding as a failure path, not just as a component: the compressor is driven continuously whenever the engine runs, and a compressor that has started to seize or has developed a bearing fault transmits that load straight back into this gear and the camshaft train behind it. Damage found here is therefore a reason to examine the compressor, not simply to fit a new gear. The reverse also applies — noise attributed to the compressor sometimes originates in a worn drive gear, and the two are distinguished by measuring backlash; listening from the engine room door will not separate them.
