Genuine MAN clutch shaft for the D2866 LE401, D2866 E, D2842 LE443 and D2848 LE422, 1.03 kg. In a starter motor the clutch is the one-way drive that lets the pinion turn the engine and then release once the engine fires, and the shaft carries it. A clutch that has begun to slip under load produces a starter that spins without cranking — a symptom regularly blamed on the battery or the ring gear.
