Genuine MAN exciter winding for the D2842 LE443, 1.53 kg. Field windings fail from insulation breakdown rather than from wear: heat and vibration degrade the insulation between turns until a short forms, and the machine then produces reduced or no output with nothing visible on inspection. The test is electrical, not visual. Measure resistance across the winding and to earth, and compare against the figure in the workshop documentation rather than against a nominal value.
