Genuine MAN starter armature for the D2866 LE401, D2866 E and D2848 LE422, 4.45 kg and 235 mm long. The armature is the rotating winding of a DC starter motor, and its commutator is a wear surface that can be skimmed within limits. A shorted armature is the diagnosis behind one particular symptom: enormous current draw with slow, laboured cranking and a starter that gets hot quickly. That combination points at the armature rather than at the battery it appears to be flattening.
