Genuine MAN exciter winding for the D2866 LE401, D2866 E and D2848 LE422, 1.19 kg. The exciter winding provides the magnetic field the machine needs before it can generate anything, which is why an alternator has to be given current to start working rather than producing it from nothing. A machine that produces no output at all, with good brushes and a sound rectifier, is pointing at the field circuit — and that circuit includes the warning lamp and its wiring, not only this winding.
