Genuine MAN crankcase assembly for the D2866 LE401 and D2866 E, the 11.97-litre in-line six. On an in-line engine the crankcase is simpler and lighter than a V equivalent, which makes the rebuild-onto-a-new-casting route more often economic than it is on a twelve-cylinder. That said, the arithmetic still turns on what else is being replaced: where the crankshaft needs grinding, the heads need work and the pistons are due, a long block is frequently the better answer. Price both before dismantling starts, since the comparison is much harder to make once the engine is in pieces. Getting quotations for both routes before the engine comes out is the only point at which the comparison can be made honestly. Once the engine is in pieces, the sunk labour distorts the comparison in favour of whichever option looks closer to finished.
