Genuine MAN oil filter head for the D2866 LE401. The filter head carries the oil in and out of the filter and usually houses the bypass valve — the valve that opens when the element is blocked or the oil is too cold to pass through it, sending unfiltered oil to the bearings rather than starving them. That is a deliberate compromise: unfiltered oil is better than no oil. A bypass valve stuck open means the engine has been running unfiltered, which is worth knowing when investigating unexplained wear.
