Genuine MAN camshaft for the D2866 E, the 11.97-litre in-line six. Axial location deserves attention at installation. A camshaft is positioned lengthways by a thrust arrangement, and endfloat outside specification lets the shaft walk in its bearings — which changes the relationship between lobe and follower across the shaft's travel and accelerates wear on both. Check endfloat with a dial gauge once the shaft is in and the drive gear fitted, before the engine is closed up, since the measurement is trivial at that point and requires the timing cover off again afterwards. The same check is worth making on an engine being investigated for noise, because a shaft with excessive endfloat produces a knock that is easily attributed to something more expensive.
