Genuine MAN camshaft for the D2866 LE401 to LE403, LE405 and related builds. On engines of this generation the injection pump is driven from the camshaft gear train, which means the condition of the camshaft drive affects fuel delivery timing directly. What follows in practice is that an engine with a worn cam drive can produce symptoms that look like injection equipment faults — hard starting, uneven running, smoke at particular loads — and injectors or a pump can be replaced without improvement. Where fuel-system work has already been done without resolving a symptom, backlash in the gear train is worth measuring before anything further is bought. It is a cheap measurement that either eliminates an expensive possibility or explains an expensive puzzle.
