Genuine MAN carbon brush set for the D2840 LE301 and D2848 LE422. Brushes are designed to wear so that the surface they run on does not, which makes them the cheapest scheduled component in a starter or alternator and the one most often left until it fails. Each brush has a minimum length below which its spring can no longer hold it against the commutator or slip ring, and output falls away before contact is lost entirely. A machine that works when cold and stops charging when hot is describing exactly that.
